Learn how we research, score, and rank restaurant POS, inventory, online ordering, scheduling and accounting software. Our editorial process is independent of vendor payments.
How We Evaluate Restaurant Software
Our editorial rankings are independent of vendor relationships. Here is exactly how we research, score, and update every restaurant POS, inventory, ordering and reservation product in our directory.
Editorial Independence
Vendor rankings and scores are determined solely by our research criteria. A vendor cannot buy a higher ranking, a better score, or a positive review. Sponsored listings are clearly labeled and appear separately from editorial rankings.
Regular Updates
Software changes fast. We review every vendor listing at least once per year and update scores when products release major new features, change pricing, or receive significant new user reviews. The last review date appears on every vendor page.
Practitioner Perspective
Our editorial team brings hands-on restaurant software evaluation experience. Assessments reflect how software performs in real restaurant workflows — order entry and payments, kitchen routing, food-cost control and scheduling — not just what the vendor demo shows.
Our Evaluation Criteria
Every vendor in our directory is assessed across six weighted criteria. The weighting reflects what restaurant owners, restaurant owners and multi-unit groups tell us matters most when selecting software.
| Criterion | Weight | What We Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Core Functionality | 30% | Does the product cover the fundamental workflows for its category? A POS must handle fast order entry, check splitting, payments and tips, and kitchen routing. An inventory platform must cover counts, invoice capture, recipe costing and variance. We score depth and completeness of core features. |
| Ease of Use | 20% | How quickly can a new user become productive? We evaluate UI design, handheld and mobile app quality, onboarding flow, and the learning curve for both front-of-house and back-of-house staff. |
| Integration Ecosystem | 15% | How well does the product connect with payment processors, accounting systems (QuickBooks, Xero), online ordering and delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats), payroll and reservations? We assess native integrations, open API quality and data-integration depth. |
| Pricing and Value | 15% | Is the pricing transparent? Does the product deliver measurable ROI relative to its cost? We consider total cost of ownership including implementation, data conversion, training, and ongoing per-user or per-seat subscription fees. |
| Security and Compliance | 10% | Support for customer payment and PII data protection, SOC 2 Type II attestation, data encryption, access controls, and audit trails. We also weigh the vendor's track record for uptime and resolving implementation issues. |
| User Satisfaction | 10% | Aggregate ratings from verified user reviews across G2, Capterra, industry surveys, and our own platform. We weight review recency and reviewer seniority when calculating satisfaction scores. |
Weights are applied consistently within each software category. We do not adjust weights for specific vendors.

Our Research Process
Product Research
We evaluate product documentation, request demos, and where possible test the software directly. For enterprise platforms, we interview implementation consultants and end users with direct experience.
User Review Aggregation
We aggregate verified user ratings from G2, Capterra, industry surveys and operator communities. We exclude reviews marked as incentivized when calculating satisfaction scores, and weight reviews from the past 24 months more heavily than older reviews.
Scoring and Writing
An editor applies the six-criterion framework to produce a weighted score. A separate writer then produces the vendor review, ensuring scoring and editorial content are produced independently to reduce bias.
Annual Review Cycle
Every vendor listing is reviewed on a 12-month cycle. Mid-cycle updates are triggered by major product releases, pricing changes, or a significant shift in user review sentiment of more than 0.3 rating points.

Affiliate Links
Restaurant Software does not currently operate any affiliate or referral program. Links to vendor websites are plain, unpaid links (rel="nofollow") and we receive no commission when you click through. If we introduce affiliate links in the future, they will be clearly disclosed and will not influence rankings, scores, or editorial content.
Sponsored Listings
We do not currently sell sponsored placement. Category listings and rankings are entirely editorial. Should sponsored placements ever be introduced, they will carry a clear "Sponsored" label, sit separately from editorial rankings, and never affect a vendor's score or ranking position.
Vendor-Provided Information
Vendors may submit corrections to factual information such as pricing, feature availability, and company details. We review all vendor submissions before publishing. Vendors cannot edit editorial assessments, scores, or review summaries.
Questions and Corrections
If you believe information on a vendor page is factually incorrect, or if you have questions about our methodology, contact our editorial team. We aim to respond to correction requests within 5 business days.
