Alternatives to every major restaurant platform — Toast, Clover, Aloha, OpenTable, MarginEdge and more: who switches, why, and what each replacement costs.
Restaurant software alternatives 2026 — what to switch to, and why operators do
Every platform in this catalog has an alternatives page: who typically outgrows it, the replacement options ranked by closeness of fit, and what each one charges. The switch trigger under each name is that vendor's own most-cited complaint from third-party reviews — not our opinion of it.
For this guide we tested and reviewed the platforms hands-on wherever a trial or demo was available, and verified each price against the vendor's own pricing page before publishing.
Why restaurants switch platforms
Four reasons account for most moves, and only one of them is features. Processing lock-in: the POS is tied to its own payment processing, so a better rate elsewhere means replacing the POS. Contract and billing friction: multi-year terms, hard-to-cancel billing and surprise line items are the top complaint theme in this category's reviews. Outgrowing the tier: a system that fits one room reports badly across five. Support at the wrong hour: a Saturday-night outage costs more than the subscription.
Each alternatives page starts from the platform you have, lists the closest replacements from the same category, and shows pricing posture, deployment, company-size fit and one real differentiator per option.
What to price before you move
- The processing rate, not the software fee. At $80,000 a month in card volume, a 0.3-point rate difference is about $240 a month — more than most software tiers. Published in-person rates in this catalog run from 2.3% + 10¢ upward.
- Hardware you cannot reuse. Proprietary terminals rarely re-provision onto a different processor, so budget replacement, not transfer.
- Exit terms on the current contract. Financed hardware and three-year software terms usually survive your decision to leave.
- Data you need out. Menu, item mix, guest and sales history: ask for the export format before you sign the replacement. Start from integrations to see what connects natively.
